I’ve Gone to Part-Time to Focus on my Art

I have worked as a cook on and off for about 18 years now. I love being in the kitchen and the camaraderie in there is always one of respect and trust - if you can’t trust the cook next to you, then service is going to go badly.

Although I have loved working in the food industry, in recent years, my focus has shifted to more creative outlets such as videography and music. Working in a kitchen is hard and stressful…and you don’t get paid very much, but the rewards of working for a great company such as the Calgary Winter Club and the routine of working a regular job (a discussion for another article) has stalled my creative output. Which is my responsibility and now I have it all in front of me. If I want more money I have to work for it and it also feels like I have nothing to lose so I am going for it!

Videography, music, script writing, and creative writing are all things that have been passions of mine since I was in my early twenties. Telling stories through these mediums is a very challenging and rewarding experience and I look forward to making this my career.

The possibilities are endless in this world and how much energy you put into things matter. Putting effort into a profession such as cooking and working eight hours a day at it just didn’t make sense to me anymore. I had to start working towards what I want and not what was a normal job especially because I’m not happy anymore working as a cook.

I have a supportive family and girlfriend, and I don’t own a house or a car, I also don’t have any children - this is a situation that a lot of people don’t have, and that isn’t lost on me, so I feel that I have to take advantage of it and make something of it.

This experience that I have created for myself is pretty special and will take me to places and meet people I never thought possible so I am excited - this past Monday I can honestly say I was happy to get up this morning and get to work!

This is the first of many posts to document this experience so that I have a record of what I’m doing and also for others who need a change and are tired of waiting until they retire to have joy in this life.

I am

Joseph
